Darren Waller Traded to the New York Giants
The Giants will send a third-round pick (100th overall) to the Raiders in exchange for 2020 Pro Bowler Waller, who will provide quarterback Daniel Jones with an established veteran target in the passing game.
Waller had back-to-back seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2019 and 2020, but he has been plagued by multiple injuries over the past two seasons, appearing in just 20 games combined during that time. Since 2019, Waller still ranks third in catches (280) and receiving yards (3,394) behind Travis Kelce and Mark Andrews.
The Giants will re-sign Waller, 30, for four more seasons thanks to the three-year, $51 million contract extension he signed with the Raiders in September. New York is expected to use a double-tight formation with Waller and Daniel Bellinger, a fourth-round pick last year, at the position.
Waller could be expendable in Las Vegas after the Raiders agreed to a three-year deal with free agent receiver Jacoby Mayes earlier Tuesday, joining a receiving corps that already includes Davante Adams and Hunter Renfro. Backup tight end Foster Morrow played well filling in for Waller last season, but he plans to enter free agency, leaving Las Vegas with only Jesper Halstead and Cole Fotheringham currently under contract as the only tight ends.
Las Vegas reportedly turned down a second-round pick from the Packers at last year’s trade deadline, but now has 12 picks, including the Giants’ third-round pick, which is a very promising one.
The 6-foot-6 Waller appeared in just nine games last season and had 28 catches for 388 yards and three touchdowns.
Waller recently married Las Vegas ACES linebacker Kelsey Plumb. The ACES are owned by Mark Davis, who also owns the Raiders.
Las Vegas’ most deserving sports star couple has tied the knot!
On Saturday, Las Vegas ACES linebacker Kelsey Plum and Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller revealed on Instagram that they said “I do.”
She shared a series of photos of herself and Waller, 30, as they stood in front of guests and shared their first kiss as a couple.
“He 🖤3.4.23,” Plum, 28, wrote in the caption of five photos, including a separate shot of her smiling at her future husband as she said her vows and another of her engagement ring peeping out of their folded hands.
Plumb and Waller, 30, applied for a marriage license on Jan. 22 and will be married on March 4, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. They have reportedly been dating since last year.
