Michelle Yeoh made Oscar history on Sunday night when she became the first Asian to win an Oscar for best actress.
Michelle Yeoh won the best actress Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the first Oscar of her career. The accolade follows a long career in martial arts and action films such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Yes, Ma ‘am.
The sci-fi adventure, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, stars Yeoh as middle-aged laundry owner Evelyn Wang, who finds she must connect with her alternate self from a parallel universe while being audited by the IRS, to prevent catastrophic damage.
Michelle Yeoh was the third woman of Asian origin to win at the Oscars, after Yuh-Jung yoon in “Minari” and Miyoshi meki in “Sayonara,” She was also the first Asian woman to win Best in show. To win the trophy, Yeoh beat Cate Blanchett (” Tar “), Michelle Williams (” The Fabelmans “), Andrea Riseborough (” To Leslie “) and Ana de Alma (” Blonde “).

Yeoh was born in Ipoh, Perak, on Aug 6, 1962, to a Malaysian Chinese family of Hocken and Cantonese descent. Her parents are Janet Yeoh and Yeoh Kian teik (who died on 5 November 2014), a lawyer and Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) politician. Although she is of Chinese descent, she grew up speaking Malay and English and cannot read or write Chinese. She said in 2022 that it was her “biggest regret.” Still, she became fluent in Cantonese in the 1980s and picked up some Mandarin in the early 2000s.
Yeoh loved dancing from a young age and started ballet at the age of four. She attended primary school in Ipoh Convent Secondary. However, a spinal injury prevented her from becoming a professional ballerina, and she shifted her focus to choreography and other arts. In 1998, Yeoh became engaged to Alan Helderman, an American cardiologist. In 2004, she began dating Jean Todt, then Ferrari’s managing director and chief executive, and later became the president of the FIA.In July 2008, she confirmed her engagement to Craig Ferguson during an interview with him on CBS ‘The Late Show. She and Todd live in Geneva, Switzerland.
